You delegate and your task list only gets longer<\/h2>\n\n

You delegate a task. Short, specific, no fluff. You know what you expect. For you, it’s obvious. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few hours later… it comes back. “Quick question.” Nothing major. Actually quick. But then… another one comes back<\/strong>. And one more, “just in case,” “to make sure.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each one individually makes sense. Each one takes just a moment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the end of the day, it turns out that the topic that was supposed to be off your mind has been circling around it like a starving mosquito. In theory, delegation in a startup should relieve the founder. In practice, it often ends with more micro-decisions<\/strong> than before. <\/p>\n<\/div>

You can delegate so that the topic actually disappears from your desk<\/h2>\n\n

Imagine you hand off a task and it actually stops being yours. Not because you stop caring about the result. But because your people simply understand what you really need<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

You no longer get a series of “quick questions.” You get a proposed solution<\/strong>. A sensible one. <\/p>\n\n

You’re no longer the final authority approving every detail. You’re a reference point for direction. <\/p>\n\n

Not at all because you give more detailed instructions. But because the other person understands not only “what to do,” but “why it matters” and “how to know they did a good job.” <\/p>\n\n

Because delegation doesn’t fail due to lack of precision. It fails due to lack of context. <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n

Without context, the task will always come back<\/h2>\n\n

In the early stage of business development, all the context lives in your head<\/strong>. You know why the topic is important. You’re aware of the constraints. You understand which compromises are acceptable and which are not. This context works like a mental shortcut \u2014 that’s why you can make decisions so quickly. <\/p>\n\n

When you delegate a task, you pass on a piece of that puzzle. The other person sees the fragment you intuitively selected, but doesn’t see the whole picture<\/strong>. Then it’s natural for them to come back for the missing pieces. <\/p>\n\n

This isn’t a problem with your people’s competence. It’s a natural reaction to insufficient context. With an incomplete picture, it’s simply hard to make decisions independently<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

Without context, people protect themselves with questions. They check if they understand the direction correctly. They ask about details because they don’t want to miss the mark. They check boundaries because they don’t know where their responsibility ends. They ask about details because they want to be sure they understand “good work” the same way you do. <\/p>\n\n

Each question sounds reasonable. Each one individually seems like a small thing. Only the sum of these “small things” starts to feel overwhelming<\/strong> and create the impression that delegation isn’t working. <\/p>\n\n

Delegation in a startup often doesn’t fail at the level of accuracy of information passed on. It fails at the level of completeness of context. <\/p>\n\n

Because if you only use part of the set, the result may not be optimal.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n
